Production Incentives Map

  • In the world of film production, location is everything. Where you decide to produce your movie can dramatically impact your film’s budget. Movie production incentives are tax benefits offered by jurisdictions throughout the United States and Canada to encourage in-state film production. Since the 1990s, states have provided increasingly competitive incentives to lure productions away from other states.

  • Creating a map seems like a pretty straightforward process, but when it comes to mapping incentives, it can get pretty intense. For example, in the US, different states have different incentives, some states have no incentives, and some cities within those states do offer incentives, not to mention the various incentives.

  • There were three design goals from the start: 1. Capture all of the current information and create a way to update the info in the future easily. 2. Have a presence on ER's website to point our customers and let them know we offer incentives support, and 3. Create a map that looks better than competitors and is easier to use.

No two states alike.

I don't know about you, but I love movies. Living in New York is often like living on a movie set. We walk through film productions all the time. It's easy to understand what all goes into production – but I had no idea where you made the production mattered as much as it does. I had no idea what was above the line and below the line, what a rebate incentive was. The wonder of UX design is the immersiveness it takes to understand what you are designing. For a while there, I felt like a movie (production incentive) star.
